Common Acne Products Side Effects

As with many other medications, acne products often have associated side effects that users should be aware of. Some of them are more serious than others, but even the most minor ones can be quite annoying. The problem with getting rid of acne is that it usually takes a long time before the desired results are visible on the skin. And in the meantime, suffers have to put up with side effects that can sometimes be just as bad as acne itself. When it comes to how to get rid of acne, you need to have the patience to bear with the side effects because some of them won’t impact your health in the long term. Then if all goes well the side effects will die down around the same time that blemishes diminish as well. Of course, this is what happens in ideal situations and real life doesn’t always work out like that. Here are the most common acne products side effects so that you know what to expect.

Dry skin – Most acne creams and lotions will have a drying effect on the skin. Their first action will be to deal with the oil on your face, but some acne products can overdo this and the result will be dry skin. On the plus side, dry skin will be initially preferable to oily skin just as long as the problem doesn’t persist. If the skin gets too dry then the skin can overcompensate by producing even more oil which can mix with dry skin flakes to create even more pore blockages. This is why it’s important not to over apply acne creams because you can end up sapping your skin of vital moisture and negating the intended effects.

Peeling – Along with making your skin more dry, some acne products might cause peeling. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it gives your face a chance to rejeuvenate itself. Your skin cells are constantly shedding and renewing themselves already, and sometimes it helps to get rid of that old crusty layer that is causing so many problems. Of course the negative thing about peeling is the fact that is doesn’t look all that attractive. As your face adjusts and your new skin cells settle, peeling should lessen as your face gets clearer.

Itching and Redness – These two side effects seem to go hand in hand, and they shouldn’t be unexpected if you think about the nature of acne products and treatments. Most acne creams and lotions have powerful chemicals that will be foreign to your skin at first. They can provoke a strong response from your skin which will not be used to having contact with these types of chemicals. These two side effects can certainly be aggravating, but they should lessen as your skin gets used to the medication.

Redness in the sun – Many acne products and medications and especially antibiotics will cause your face to react negatively if you go out into the sun for long periods of time. So if your acne medication warns you to stay out of the sun, make sure to listen. If not, you can end up with bright red skin that will be much more embarrassing than you acne alone.

Serious side effects – With most non-prescription acne medications, you won’t have to worry about more serious side effects. Of course if the dry skin, peeling, itching, and redness persist without any other improvement then you might want to try anything else. If you go to your dermatologist, he or she might prescribe you something more powerful for serious cases of acne. These types of medications will alter your body chemistry and therefore have much more serious side effects. You should tell your dermatologist if anything goes wrong, and make sure you are perfectly clear about your medical history so that you can be given the right treatment. Some of the stronger acne medications have been known to cause birth defects in pregnant women, or other complications related to blood and metabolism. You obviously never want to deal with these severe side effects so don’t try to medicate yourself without a prescription and keep in good communication with your doctor once you have started treatment.

Choose your acne products carefully and make sure to do something if they appear to be aggravating your skin. For more serious side effects associated with acne products and medications that you get from your doctor, make sure to read the label and follow instructions carefully.
